Attendance

At Biddick Academy we routinely explain to our students that ‘Attendance Matters’. If a young person is not in school, they will struggle to make progress. Evidence shows that good attendance is vital to your child’s progress, research suggests 17 days missed from school equates to a drop of 1 GCSE grade in every subject. Therefore, every day in school improves your child’s opportunity to get the best results.

All parents/carers can monitor attendance using the Class Charts app. This allows you to see your child’s attendance on a daily basis. Throughout the academic year, we recognise and reward excellent attendance with a range of trips, activities and prizes.

Our Attendance Officers, work closely with parents to support good attendance; we aim for all students to achieve at least 96% attendance. If your child is unwell and cannot attend school, please inform us, by telephone on each day of absence.  If your child needs to leave school during the school day, you will be asked to collect them from school.  For safety reasons, students are not allowed to leave school unless accompanied by a parent/carer.

By law, all schools must record and monitor attendance. Biddick Academy has a legal duty to address and explore reasons for poor attendance with parents. We must also report the names of students who are persistently absent. A persistent absentee is defined as any student whose attendance is less than 90%.

Biddick Academy asks parents to help support their child’s progress by following the suggested guidelines:

  • Only keep your child off school if you believe they are genuinely too ill to attend.
  • Make all medical appointments out of school hours; if this is not possible, ensure that your child is only absent for the duration of the appointment and attends school before and after the appointment.
  • Be aware that evidence for any absence will be requested.
  • Take holidays only during the official school holidays.
  • Ensure that your child is punctual to school each morning.
  • Ensure that if the absence is unavoidable, your child makes every effort to catch up the work missed.

We want to build positive relationships with our students and their families, however it is important to note that unauthorised absence could result in fines by way of a Fixed Penalty Notice of £60. The Fixed Penalty Notice is applied to each parent and for each child absent without permission.

Biddick Academy would ask you to consider these issues and support us in ensuring that your son or daughter has the maximum attendance possible for this year. If you are experiencing difficulties and would like support in ensuring your child attends school regularly, please contact the relevant Head of Year to discuss the matter further.

Holidays in Term Time

It is extremely unlikely that Biddick Academy will authorise a holiday within term time. As an academy we recognise that financial pressures and work commitments sometimes make it difficult to take holidays outside of school time. However, we ask for your full support in ensuring that your son / daughter is in school all of the time to access an outstanding education.

Being absent from school due to a holiday in term time will have a detrimental impact on your son or daughters’ potential to progress. It can make the difference between the achievement of grades.

If there are exceptional circumstances, you should make an application to the Headteacher in advance. It is up to the Headteacher how many days your child can be away from school if leave is granted. However, please be mindful that parents/carers can be fined for taking their child on holiday during term time without permission.
